My Restart: Portfolio Updates and Investment Strategies

It has been a while since I last updated my portfolio on this blog, with the last update being in September 2022.  Firstly, I had a change in strategy with my editor, Ram, which took away some of my time. Additionally, my family requires more of my attention, especially my daughter who is turning 4, and my work in a startup never ends, leaving me with low energy levels by the end of the day. Unfortunately, this meant that I had to put a hold on uploading videos to my YouTube channel for now. I also wanted to explain 2 events that have occurred in my investing journey this year.  At the start of 2023, I sold all my stocks, not due to the market environment but solely to change my broker. This event took about 10 days and resulted in an opportunity cost of at least 10k due to missing out on gains. Despite this, I took the time to review my remaining investments, which accounted for only 40% of my initial investments.  As a result, I developed a new roadmap for selecting ...

Portfolio and Life Updates

Image
Hi Everybody, My last article was almost two months ago. Numerous things had occurred and much had changed. In July, I switched to a new start-up. Even though I had only been there for two months, it had already felt like a long time. My brain cells were nearly completely depleted each day due to the fast-paced work environment, which is why I lack the energy to do anything after work. After work, I essentially felt like a zombie. Hopefully, as I get used to the fast-pace environment, I will be able to find more time to write. In addition, there was lately another family emergency. But now everything is back to normal. These experiences have made me wish to spend more time with my loved ones each day once I go home. Thus, there is even less time to blog. But today I did manage to find some time. So let me update my portfolio since it also underwent numerous adjustments. Before that, I'd like to thank uSMART in advance for the mooncake, cup, and plush dolphin! The soft toy is a big...

Reflections and My Top 10 Positions

Where should I start? Prior to March 20, I primarily invested in SG firms. My portfolio suffered a 40 percent decrease as a result of the covid-19 pandemic. I've been concentrating on the US market since May/June 20. As of March 21, my portfolio had broken even and had returned around 15%. But then "Bill Hwang" shows up, and my portfolio suffered a gunshot wound that can be recovered in a short period of time. However, I later became a Tencent and Baba shareholder. After that, we know what happened. My portfolio is currently severely in the red, with losses perhaps approaching 50%. Worse than the March 2020 decline. In this portfolio update, I'd like to reflect on the reasons for my portfolio's significant drop. After all, the most crucial aspect of being an investor is to evaluate and comprehend what may have been done better. 1. Lack of Focus on Financials It still makes sense based on the qualitative way I examined companies – by understanding their business, c...

Updates On My Top 10 Positions (Including The $21.8K Portfolio)

Image
Its been some time since I updated my portfolio s . To recap, I have a few on-going portfolios  (including the new $21.8k portfolio *) that I am managing. Thus, this update is a result of the consolidation of all companies in the various portfolios.  *Note that I will not be updating the $21.8k portfolio separately. But I will write an article on it once the whole experiment ended. In the last update of my positions , I have already mentioned that things are not looking good in my portfolios, especially since I was more of a small cap investor.  The market has been on a further downward trend as a result of recent macro events such as the Ukraine-Russia war and potential Fed interest rate hikes, and this is reflected in my portfolio as well. Somehow my portfolio may have went back to March 2020 levels.  With the released of the recent quarterly earnings, I have further consolidated the positions through the following actions: Sold 2 of my previous Top 10 positions -...

Updates On My Top 10 Positions & Where The Funds $ Has Gone To

Image
I will like to do an update today. It is probably one of the worst start to a new year for my portfolio. My Estimated Performance for Past Month Just take a look at my estimated* performance. At the start of the year, I was performing slightly better than S&P500 and now I am down 12.07%. *Do note that the returns include options. Nevertheless, being in this market for over 10 years, I probably felt that I became a true investor over the last 2 years. In fact, I believe I matured much more over the last 3 months.  I personally felt that one can only see the growth of an investor in the darkest times.  "During the bull market, the hardest thing is to sell. But even if you sell, you still make money.  But during the bear market, the hardest thing is to think rationally. It is not even about what to do, but it is what to do based on the situation you are in." This is definitely one of the darkest time for me as an investor. In the past, during a bear market, I am always t...

Top 10 Position In My PortfolioS

It’s been a long while as I update my blog. You can deem this as a return to writing till my “energy” runs out again. Market been volatile, so have my portfolio. Therefore, for this post, its probably time to talk a bit more about my portfolios and the top 10 positions. The Background of My PortfolioS For those that still do not know, I had 2 portfolio s .  As I had explained previously, one of them is solely US companies, and the other is a mixture of SG and US companies. What I did not state is that the one solely with US companies has a 3-year period. The one with a mixture of SG/US companies has a 10-year period. However, over time, both portfolios have changed. The timeline remains the same. But both of them currently has a mixture of US, SG and HK companies. In addition, I started a 3 rd portfolio that will consist solely of US companies lasting till Dec 21. This portfolio is a trading/active management experiment portfolio. Since starting in 30 Aug 21, I have lost...
