A Letter to My Fundamental Scorecard Website Subscribers

Image
Dear Subscribers of Fundamental Scorecard, Thank you for continuing to subscribe to us. The database has been updated. How have you been? As the 3rd quarter draws to a close, this year seems to give us a peak towards a pre-crisis market. Having a long-term mindset, we try our best to understand Mr Market while holding our core investing principles firm. This resulted me in changing The Ultimate Scorecard once again (without change name) . As I have stated previously, I removed the dividend scorecard portion and expanded on the valuation portion. Currently, the expanded valuation portion acts as a separate calculation of the valuation of the company based on the free cash flow it generated. It is called Estimated Valuation . It is an estimation of the value of the company based on 1. 0% growth; and  2. a series of discount rate ranging from 15% to 30%; and 3. The last 5 years of free cash flow it generated There is a second check on the valuation based on Gra...

My Faith Has Paid Off

Image
Today, I will like to talk about my holding in  Quarterhill Inc. Before I continue on the main topic, I like to inform the readers that I will be joining the SGX Bull Charge Stock Challenge . Although I maybe putting my reputation on the line, and I will most probably lose as the tracking period is only 2.5 months, but I will just join for the fun of it. I will try my Big Ideas Theory Strategy with a slight tweak for this competition. In view of this, I will probably reveal some of my Big Ideas. Stay tuned! Image Taken From InvestingNote Back to Quarterhill Inc... As per Wikipedia, Quarterhill Inc. (Quarterhill) is formerly known as WiLan Inc., and it is a Canadian public technology holding company, based in Ottawa, Ontario. It was founded in 1992 as a wireless technology company. In the mid-2000s, it gradually transitioned into a patent licensing company. In 2017, it renamed itself Quarterhill, and is attempting to become a holding company specializing in the Inte...

How Do We Measure A "Moat"?

Image
I believe many of you, similar to me, have your minds on World Cup and your portfolio have taken a back seat. After all, with the trade tariffs news ( US and Europe , US and China , US and Canada ), Fed rate hikes , and ECB to phase out QE at the end of the year, I have major doubts the share prices will rise back next week. STI have also fallen from 3,385.71, as of 26 Dec 2017, to 3,356.73 as of 15 Jun 2018. This is the first time in 6 months that STI have fallen below the 26 Dec 2017 level. In addition, we are also having the "sell in May and go away till November" effect and most probably the World Cup effect. So in order to sleep well, how should we invest? I always felt investing in fundamentally strong companies that is constantly able to generate good earnings will generally help retail investors to sleep well. In order to do that, Simple Investor and I created Fundamental Scorecard website. As of this month, Simple Investor has continued to improve his F...

Fundamental Scorecard Counters Reaction to Last Friday's Market Correction

Image
This is just a short post to emphasize on how my Fundamental Scorecard strategy works out. The global market (STI, Hang Seng Index and DJI) has become all red last Friday (2 February 2018). For my portfolio, I tend to break them into different segments. From all the segment shown below, you realized that only the Fundamental Scorecard segment did not have a counter that make losses. Do note that the change is calculated between the share price on 26 December 2017 and as of 2 February 2018: If you are interested to know more about The Ultimate Scorecard or Full Analysis , do visit the Fundamental Scorecard website for more information!  Oh... and do remember, please like our Facebook page ( T.U.B Investing ) and follow me on InvestingNote .

This Is My Rant!

Image
I have been prompted by some of my friends, that there are more and more competition within the subscription website space. Before you continue, let me emphasize that I am not belittling any other website or methods. If you are offended by my post, I like to apologize first. And you have been warned... But I am wondering if this happens because of the bull run? Will all the methods stand the test of time? How will a method turn out during a bear market? If a subscriber fully understand how a particular method works? If you do not understand, then are you doing it right? Having been in this industry for some time now, I realise that retail investors are impatient and always tend to go for the fastest method. Picture taken from www.safalniveshak.com A method that can promised returns within a very short time frame is the method they will go for. Thus, this made many investors go for Technical Analysis (aka TA) methods. Fundamental Analysis (aka FA) methods, like those withi...

Fundamental Scorecard = Mechanical Investing

I had learned about a new term after reading about Lazy Singaporean's Blog Post - Is mechanical investing a form of index investing? It was the first time I came across this term, "Mechanical Investing". After I googled, I found that Investopedia state that mechanical investing is a form of " buying and selling stocks according to a screen based on predetermined criteria, usually with the help of technical indicators such as relative strength or momentum. This method allows traders to enter transactions without emotion and backtest their strategies by using historical data from any time period. " It seems that without any prior knowledge of this term, I have been following mechanical investing via my scorecard method. Although I am not a trader, but I have been practicing " buying and selling stocks according to a screen based on predetermined criteria " via the scorecard method. I have also " backtest these strategies by using histor...

All Roads Lead to Rome

Image
This post is for many of you who went for the recent Value/Growth Investing Workshop, for the readers who have read the post on the Ultimate Scorecard, and for the subscribers to the Ultimate Scorecard database via Fundamental Scorecard website. Because once again I had made some changes to the Ultimate Scorecard. Few days ago, I was prompted by a subscriber who went for the workshop that "PB to ROE" equals to "PE" ratio! Seriously I was dumbfounded. Thus, this weekend I decided to double check on the database and I found that this is absolutely true. Hence, if I continue to use "PB to ROE", I will end up putting more emphasis on "PE" ratio. Even if I amend some of the figures, I realized the impact will not be great. Therefore, I decide to change the criteria from "PB to ROE" to just "ROE" ratio. This is because I still want a criteria to calculate management capability. In addition, the subscriber also shared a...

Launch of Fundamental Scorecard

Image
On 26 August 2017, Simple Investor SG and I conducted our very 1st Value/Growth Investing workshop and this is also the event where we launch our very own database website, Fundamental Scorecard . The event was a success as everyone who came seems to gain some useful insights, and to our astonishment, the sign up rate was rather high. Furthermore, we have also invited some prestigious guest to our event, such as Christopher of Growing Your Tree of Prosperity , Brian of A Path to Forever Financial Freedom , Richard of Invest Openly as well as friends from InvestingNote were there. We were just glad they agree to come and wanted to get some feedback from them. Nevertheless, to our amazement, they have already written very positive reviews of the event and the Fundamental Scorecard.
